As any major honors show nears, there’s always an outcry to include fresh award types to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and delight the hearts of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer has already made supporting a scary games classification. That would rule. Equally deserving are tabletop games, which is a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist if I try to elbow in front since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, I possess a compelling case supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Categorizing art by genre is not a science; opinions vary greatly, and it will always spark debates and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. But it is a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, that demonstrate such variety they hardly constitute a single creative category.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of gaming accomplishments to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Existing Game Classification System
The major gaming awards offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories successfully include many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. No appropriate category exists to accommodate them. Think about these recent excellent titles, showing diverse approaches: structural challenges from a specific release, intense tile-matching from another release, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Nowhere, that’s where.
Recognition Challenges
Many instances occur outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the intensely contested independent game categories.
- One classic puzzle game wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another creative title was excluded during that ceremony
- Popular arranging title was overlooked recently
- Limited numbers of brain-teasers scraped into small studio or handheld classifications
Significance of Puzzle Games
Frequently they represent small games, yet the craft behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Famous handheld logic titles stand as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for over a decade.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals famous sandbox experiences claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
The Solution and Justification
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter this problem. One could readily select a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games every year with ease — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these include experiences that otherwise have no home during prominent ceremonies. Puzzle game makers operate at the challenging frontier interactive creation, producing among most fundamental forms of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay 35 years.
