Sam Fender received the Mercury Prize in October in Newcastle

The star has given the complete sum of his £25,000 award prize money to the trust for venues, which works to protect the Britain's independent music venues.

He was presented with the cheque on October 16 as his new release People Watching was named the outstanding release of the past year.

The musician has decided to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the vital role local spots fulfilled in his initial steps.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the gigs I performed around the area, and elsewhere, when I was starting out," said Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, over 150 of these locations have ceased operations – approximately one-sixth of the entire UK sector.

Recently, major artists including Pulp, the group Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its efforts to help venues survive, by adding a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which benefits local stages.

Fender also participated, collecting in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to assist 38 small stages across Britain.

These funds helped spaces that were dealing with imminent closure due to challenges caused by floods, blazes and personal losses, as well as regulatory hurdles, court cases and neighbor objections.

Additional spaces were granted monetary aid in upgrading amenities and technical equipment that positively impacted artists and audiences.

"The notion that revenue from performances in major spaces supports the independent spots, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just sensible," the star has commented.

Fender is far from the only musician to donate his honor funds to good deeds.

Back when they earned the trophy in the mid-90s for their album Different Class, frontman Cocker announced that the group would give their winnings to the charity the charity.

During 2002, artist the artist divided her award across a few organizations, like the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"Additionally, I contributed a thousand pounds to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I did gymnastics when I was growing up and they needed new equipment," the artist explained to the media.

Previously, they contributed their prize money to the youth organization that nurtured their band, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Also the 1994 recipients M People donated their winnings to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was found to have the illness.

"Winning was quite enough," said vocalist Heather Small. "The money was the extra but we could do without the extra, because we had the honor. So our winning affected the lives of others."

Last week, the Music Venues Trust shared it had saved several small stages in that region, by placing them under community ownership.

One venue in that area and The Croft in Bristol were acquired under the Own Our Venues program, which is funded by Arts Council England and supporters who buy "stakes" in the properties.
